DIY Modern Stump Side Table

You probably know that stump tables are all the rage right now and last year I stumbled across a nicely shaped stump in our neighborhood. I knew I would make a table out of it but I wanted to do something completely different to give it a modern edge

Things you'll need: Stump, electric sander, 80 and 220 grit sandpaper, painters tape, trashbag, drop cloth, 2 paint brushes, Wood protector and waterproofer (Thompson's Waterseal), paint, prong back studs.

Give your stump a good sanding using 80-grit sandpaper and an electric sander until almost smooth to the touch. Finish with the 220-grit sandpaper so the stump has a very smooth finish.

Pour your sealer into a bowl and paint the sealer onto the bottom of the stump with a paint brush. When the sealer is dry to the touch turn the stump over and repeat.

Next, tape off the area where you will be painting and brush on the sealer below the tape. Remove the tape.

When the sealer is dry to the touch re-tape the area where you will be painting. Paint two coats of white latex paint onto the taped-off area.

When the paint is dry, turn the stump over and cover the bottom with a trash bag.

Choose any paint color that works with your decor and splatter paint your stump. To create a splatter pattern, get a generous amount of paint on your brush and swing it back and forth near the stump. Use one or as many colors as you like for an interesting and unique splatter design!

Remove the bag and tape and let the stump dry for 24 to 48 hours

When the paint is dry, gently hammer the studs into the wood along the edge of your paint line. This will give the stump table an edgy look and camouflage any imperfections in the paint line.
