I have a toddler son. Toddlers and Christmas trees (and all their ornaments) don't mix very well, especially those precious keepsake ornaments that are irreplaceable. While we've scaled down the number of breakable ornaments since he's been born (shatterproof is our friend!), it hasn't changed his fascination with the glowing tree of wonder. He still can't help but try and touch nearly every. single. thing. Even if the ornaments are placed above his reach, the lights, ribbon, and branches themselves are too much for the little guy to resist.
Since this proved to be quite the surprise child safety hazard (nobody likes broken glass or a toppled tree), I created this DIY toddler tree that is just for him! He can have a blast decorating and redecorating it as much as he likes and it's completely safe (for him and the tree). Nothing will get broken and he won't get hurt, and it will be a Merry Christmas indeed!I grabbed a safety cone from our local home improvement store that was about 27" tall. They had three different sizes and this was the medium one, which was the perfect height for my son.
Needless to say, this tree has been a BIG hit with my little man. Now he knows that this is *his* tree and he is free to play with it as much as he wants. The other tree, however, remains hands-off.
A great part about this project too is that after Christmas, all the flannel and felt can easily be slid on and off and all the toys returned to his regular stash, which makes for easy storage!
