Airing Our Dirty Laundry (Room)

I've never been arrested. Never even snuck out of my parents house in high school. But dirty laundry, I've got a ton of it. Trust me. I know I may sound squeaky clean, but that's just a guise. Truly, this family could share TONS of sordid, dirty laundry with you...

And that, friends, is just the tip of the dirty iceberg. See, that's our laundry chute, and 24/7, that sucker is chock-full of dirty. Truly, it's not until that thing is so jam packed with clothing and the chute starts vomiting onto the laundry room floor that we will take any action on the laundry front.
Laundry is (one of) the banes of my existence. There is no use trying to finish it, because that's an unachievable goal. It's like weeding. It is never, ever DONE.





Yes. These. Both of these. Are you with me?





My dirty laundry problem used to be exacerbated by the fact that I didn't like our laundry room. It put off 1990s vibes...and not in a good way. I'd get the urge to sing a little "Talk Dirty to Me" ala Poison, or AC/DC "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" each time I walked through there. And the AC/DC song was kind of like salt in an open wound, because trust me, if there was any way to get the dirty laundry deed done dirt cheap, I hadn't found it.
So I had dirty laundry in a dated laundry room. Bad combo.





The space is great. Nice window, and we LOVE the laundry chute. We just wanted to update things a bit. Here's what we did...
Started by removing the shorter oak cabinets, and purchased 2 inexpensive, ready to assemble cabinets, and painted them ourselves, which saved a bundle.
The old oak cabinets were repurposed/re-installed in the garage for extra storage.





Installed some PVC beadboard on the opposite wall. That stuff can take a beating, which is great for this very highly trafficked area.
Installed some new lighting, an inexpensive indoor/outdoor rug, some super fun, decorative hooks (similar to THESE)and we're done!





It's one of the most used spaces in our home, and we're happy with the results that we were able to get for a couple hundred dollars.
