From Granny to Glam: My Foyer Makeover

The foyer of our home was a perfectly preserved time capsule of 1980's builder grade materials---from the ugly light fixture right down to the amber-colored plexiglass windows on the front door. I transformed the space from granny to glam with a dramatic new

As part of our kitchen renovation about 4 years ago, we extended the kitchen's new black tile flooring into the foyer and added a tile inlay that I love. The new floor looked amazing! The rest of the space still looked blah ... and then I started painting furniture for our shop All Things New Again in Leesburg, VA. The entryway turned into a storage spot for half-finished paint projects (which didn't bother me too much, but really annoyed my husband!)





I had a plan to transform this space from granny to glam. I wanted to paint the walls white-white, paint the ceiling, trim and doors black, and install The Most Fabulous Crystal Chandelier You Have Ever Seen. The chandelier has been sitting in a box at the bottom of our coat closet for 4 years. I thought it would look amazing against a black ceiling.
My husband wasn't convinced. He thought a black ceiling would make the room too dark and feel boxy and cramped, like the ceiling was closing in on you. He didn't like my idea at all, but he's a good guy and painted the ceiling for me anyway while I was at work one day. The paint color is called "Carbon" from Behr.





It was stunning and elegant and dramatic---exactly what I wanted! The space does not feel dark or boxy or cramped. It feels glamorous, like the lobby of some elegant vintage hotel. Even my husband admitted he liked it when we were all done. (Victory!!)

Even the amber-colored plexiglass looks more elegant now. (OK maybe it doesn't, but I'm just going to keep believing that it DOES until I can get those front doors replaced!)
